Congratulations 2017 Youth Tour winners

Congratulations 2017 Youth Tour winners

Petit Jean Electric Cooperative is pleased to announce the two high school students who will represent the cooperative on this year’s Youth Tour trip to Washington, D.C., June 9-15.  Shown are Brittany Shannon, of Clinton High  School and Emily Payne, of Southside High School.  They were chosen through an essay contest.  This year they were asked to elaborate on “What do you see as the biggest challenges electric cooperatives will face in the future and why?” Each year high school juniors in the Petit Jean Electric service area are invited to participate. The winning essays were selected by a panel of three judges who reside in Little Rock. This is the 27th year that the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas have sponsored the trip.

The Petit Jean Electric selectees will gather in Little Rock on June 9th for the 2017 Youth Tour orientation. In Washington, the Arkansas group will join about 1,400 other high school juniors from across the nation attending the Youth Tour.  Activities will include visits to numerous national monuments, the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Capitol, Ford’s Theater, the U.S. Holocaust Museum and Arlington National Cemetery.  In addition, the students will attend special programs developed by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), the national level organization of electric cooperatives that coordinates the national Youth Tour.

Petit Jean Electric relies on the local high schools to help promote this annual essay competition. We greatly appreciate the cooperation we receive from our schools’ administrators and teachers in making the contest and tour the success that it is.
