Why
Your Electric Rate Has Increased and What You Can Do About It!
Since
2005, Petit Jean Electric Cooperative has been forced to add 1 to 2
cents per kilowatt-hour to the electric rate you pay each month which
is reflected in the "Energy Cost Adjustment" on your monthly
bill. Like you, we are not
pleased
with this increase in the cost per kilowatt-hour.
However,
the increase in the Energy Cost Adjustment is the end result of higher
costs to produce electricity that resulted from railroad companies failing
to deliver contracted amounts of coal. This forces us to buy higher-cost
natural gas and coal from foreign countries to operate the power plants,
to make up for the lack of coal.
Despite
our attempts to get the railroad companies to ship more coal at a reasonable
cost, they have refused. We are concerned with the potential long-term
impact that this issue could have on your rates. And there are no federal
laws that regulate the railroad companies or require them to operate
competitively.
As a not-for-profit
cooperative, Petit Jean Electric does not make a profit from the Energy
Cost Adjustment. By law, it must go directly toward covering the added
cost of producing electricity. If the cost of producing electricity
decreases, so will the Energy Cost Adjustment on your bill.
