Simple Ways to Lower Water Heating Costs at Home

Did you know that heating water accounts for about 18% of your home’s electricity usage? In fact, water heating is typically the second largest energy expense in most homes.

The good news is that there are several simple ways members can reduce the amount of electricity used to heat water and lower monthly energy costs.

One of the easiest ways to save is by simply using less hot water. Shorter showers, washing laundry in cold water, and installing water-saving showerheads can all help reduce the amount of work your electric water heater has to do each day.

Another important tip is checking the temperature setting on your water heater. Many hot water heaters come pre-set at 140 degrees, which is often hotter than necessary. Water at that temperature can cause third-degree burns in as little as five seconds. Lowering the thermostat to 130 degrees can improve safety while also saving approximately 3–5% on your electric bill.

Members can also improve efficiency by insulating the hot water pipes connected to the water heater. Pipe insulation helps keep water warmer longer, reducing heat loss and helping the water heater operate more efficiently.

Energy efficiency improvements may seem small individually, but over time, these changes can add up to meaningful savings for your household. Petit Jean Electric encourages members to look for simple, practical ways to take control of their energy use and lower costs at home.
